The peninsulas and sandy barrier islands that run parallel with the coast, form a natural barrier to the Atlantic Ocean and protect a vast area of marshland, canals and islets. (at low tide other habitats are uncovered).
These Performance transform it into a wintering area for birds from North Africa and central Europe. As the swallow, sea ducks and trumpeter, who here are the coldest months of the year.
It is also an area of refuge for rare species such as chicken sultana, the chameleon, the teal, the black-headed gull or a tern of red beak. Among the most characteristic species are the sea swallow, the grey plover, the kingfisher, contribute to the important fauna in this Park.

This area houses a permanent population of 7,500 inhabitants, mostly engaged in activities related to the Ria Formosa - fishing, shellfish and salt extraction. And in the vast Tourist industry.
The Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and Christians developed the land, leaving remains that can still be seen. The Natural Park preserves this cultural heritage, recovering and preserving some tide mils and traditional fishing boats and salting tanks.
